It consists of two antigens, A and B, and, at the simplest level, four phenotypes, A, B, O, and AB. Anti‐A and ‐B are almost always present in adults lacking the corresponding antigens. ABO antibodies can cause severe and fatal haemolytic transfusion reactions.

    ABO blood group antigens are expressed mainly on the surface of red blood cells. According to studies, non-O blood type is associated with the occurrence of MI. The underlying mechanism is related not to atherosclerotic complications but to impaired hemostasis. Both A and B are dominant to O. If a heterozygous blood type A parent (IAi) and a heterozygous blood type B parent (IBi) mate, one quarter of their offspring are expected to have the AB blood type (IAIB) in which both antigens are expressed equally. Therefore, ABO blood groups are an example of: A. multiple alleles and incomplete dominance.
